Padres drop Game 1, 8-5, Peavy Out for Post Season

Posted on | October 4, 2005 | No Comments

The Padres with Jake Peavy on the mound could not produce any runs for the first 6 innings, while the Cardinals found points in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th, taking a 8 run lead, after a grand-slam by former Padre Reggie Sanders. The Padres bull pen shut down the Cards after Peavy’s departure, allowing 0 runs and 2 hits in 3 1/3 innings. The padres bench players came through in the 7, 8, and 9th inning producing 5 runs. With 2 outs, bases loaded Hernandez with a chance to have the padres take the lead, struck out swinging on 3 pitches.

If it wasn’t for the Red Alert squad, the game would appear to be a blow out, while the Padres kept the Cardinals pitching staff honest and threatened the lead in the 9th. Game two of the series takes place on Thursday, with Pedro Astacio taking on Mark Mulder.

Experience or Heroics?
Peavy’s 8 runs over 4 1/3 innings, were the probable result of a fractured rib he sustained during Western Divisional Celebration a week earlier. Without consulting the training staff, he took the mound looking to overcome what he thought was a bruised rib. When he was pulled in the 4th he was taken to the hospital for an MRI and where they’ve discovered the cracked ribs.

So the question is… Should Peavy had said something to the staff? I believe he should of brought his condition forward to the training staff so they can assess his condition. Now on the other hand, if Peavy came out and pitched 5-6 scoreless innings, he would of been praised as a hero, an imortal to play in those conditions, like Shilling and his bloody sock. I think Peavy made a mistake, but nobody should come down on him for his mistake. He lead the Padres through the season while the rest of the pitching staff was shakey. Without Peavy, the Pads wouldn’t be seeing the post season.

It could of been worse… (around the league)
With the 0-8 on the scoreboard it was looking dismal and the Padres would be the worst loss in the divisional games. A few hours later the Red Sox proved me wrong. The Red Sox fell to the White Sox 14-2. The last game was disappointing to see the Angles drop the first game to the Yanks. The BoSox and WhiteSox as well as the Yanks and Angles resume play tomorrow. The Braves and Astros also play their first Divisional Series game.
