Oct. Series Set… Go Pads!

Padres clinched the National League West for the second consecutive year, beating the Dbacks 7-6 near comeback game for the Dbacks. The stage is finally set with the Cardinals backing into the NL Central and the Dodgers snagging the Wild Card.
As you can follow, there is a great chance of the Dodgers playing the Padres for the NLCS next week. I felt so confident about this match-up, I purchased tickets for the 5th game in Los Angeles if it would come to that. I think it would only be fitting.
GM of the Year: Kevin Towers
Yes, the GM who’s head was first in line for the chopping block earlier this season is now under consideration for GM of the Year. His moves in the winter were questionable, but they all worked out for the better. And his trades and signing during the season solidified his place as a top GM. Here are a few:
- Resign Trevor Hoffman & Signing of Glenn Hoffman
- Signed: Mike Piazza
- Trade: Aki & Eaton for Gonzalaz, Young, and Sledge
- Trade: Lorretta for Mirabelli
- Trade: Mirabelli for Bard and Meredith
- Trade: Wells for AAA Catcher
- PickUps: Walker, Branyon, and Seanez
Budget: Value Can also Win Games
So the padres didn’t spend the cash on big names and didn’t carry a huge salary for their team. There is a lot of value in players, that can’t aways be purchased. With this budget, the Padres have:
- #1 Defense in the National League (.713 Eff)
- #1 Runs Allowed in the National League (673)
- #1 Starters ERA in the National League (4.09)
- #2 Bullpen ERA in the National League (3.40)
- #2 Overall ERA in MLB (3.87)
- #1 Saves in the National League (50, Tied for #2 in MLB)
