So after 32 games the MLB season is about a fifth of the way through and the San Diego Padres are in a place where they ey and the rest of the general population never expected them to be, in First Place. Are the Padres that good or is the division that bad?

Padres ARE good
The Padres have achieve the 20 win mark on the back of their pitching staff and speed on the bases They boast one of the lowest starter ERAs and lowest bullpen ERA thus far. If I remember correctly the bullpen has only lost 2 or 3 games this season. That’s pretty tough for another team to contend with if you can’t get to the starter early. The Padres also boast the highest number of stolen bases in the major with 40. When the batters get on base they are running and stealing bags on a nightly basis. This makes for an entertaining game especially if they aren’t hitting home runs.

The Div is Struggling
With the exception of the Giants, the rest of the division is having some major issues. The Dodgers starters are not what they were, the Diamond back Bullpen blows up nightly and the Rockies can’t seem to put a complete game together. It will be interesting to see how the Padres finish out the 10 game span where they play the Dodgers and Giants five times each.

Continuing with the Padre coverage from yesterday, I’m proud to say the friars beat the brew-crew last night 6-3. After an early 2 run deficit, the padres game back opening up their lead to 6-2 at one point.

Around the league, the DBacks put a stop the Rockies winning ways, and guarantee themselves a playoff spot. With their win Phillies take the lead in the NL East, as the Mets fell to Florida. With the assistance of the Padres the Cubbies claimed the NL Central.

So where does that leave the Padres? With the Mets and Rockies both loosing, they have guaranteed themselves at least a 1 game playoff. Win either Saturday or Sunday’s game and at minimum they get the Wild Card. If the Dbacks win tonight, they guarantee themselves the NL West.

So its looking like there wont be back to back to back NL West titles, but for the first time in Padre history, they are going to the playoffs for the third year in a row.

Now the only decision is.. do they celebrate with a win today or not? The dback won’t start their game until after the padre game is completed.

The Padres post season hopes ride on three games against the high-powered Brewers. With three days left on the regular season, the pad sit 1 game back in the NL-West and lead the NL Wild Card. They now control their own destiny, despite what Arizona, Colorado, Philadelphia and New York do.

Sweep the Brewers and we’re off to the post season. Sounds reasonable right? Did I mention the Brewers have to sweep the Padres to have a shot at the Cubs?

Ahh parity… not as much as the NFL, but its nice to see the NL have some. Currently the Mets and Phils are tied on top of the NL East. One will make it out to the playoffs. The other may challenge for the Wildcard. Also tied with these two are the ‘where did they come from’ Rockies who no help from the dodgers have swept their last 3 series, and are on a 11 game winning streak. Arizona gets them for 3 days at mile-high, so either outcome will benefit the padres, as long as they continue to win.

Lastly, there are tie breakers. Still in effect we could see 2 team, 3 team and even a 4 team tie breaker to determine who moves on and who goes home.

This weekend is going to be intense!

When Marc Ecko bid $752,467 for Barry Bond’s 756th home run, he knew exactly what he was going to do with it, he didn’t know what the voting public would do. Ecko placed the ball up on his website vote756, where 10m votes were cast deciding the fate of the ball. The public was given three options, bestow it to the hall, banish it into space, or brand it with an asterisk.

With 47% of the 10m voting for branding it. The ball will now be branded with an astrisk and be given to the Cooperstown Hall of Fame for display and safe keeping. In the end the ball will lay in the Hall of Fame, with a permanent reminder of the steroid era, and the circus surrounding the event.

The final percentages fall as such:

34% Bestow it to Cooperstown

47% Permanently Brand the ball with an asterisk before sending it to Cooperstown

19% Launch it into Space Forever

For the record, I voted once… and apparently the majority agreed with me.

Despite some troubles with their starting rotation, they remain 1 game out in the NL West and lead the NL Wildcard by 1.5 games. Peavy is currently leading the NL for the triple crown with 18 wins, 225 strike outs and an ERA of 2.39. These outstanding stats have him as the front runner for the NL Cy Young Award.
